Research - week 5 - 12/03/2019
Script
Hi everyone my name is Britney Good and this is my research presentation, that will discuss the key concept of consent and the history of “pun up” girls.
My research question is built around the key ideas, of “Pin up” girls, “sex sells”, “consent” and “empower in self and sexuality”. These are what I will be researching and discussing throughout my project and will be referring back to and asking myself while producing my project “am I showing these key points in my project? And are they communicated?”
So my question is
“How can I reverse the original purpose of “pinup”, “sex sell”, to a political statement of “what I wear isn’t consent” through an Ink poster self portrait, that shows empowerment in self and sexuality that is also modern in perspective?”
I also have side questions and query of
“Can you communicate, “sex sells” and “consent” through a visual image?” this is because consent and sex sells are very contrasting things, and
“Can you express self empowerment through a visually sexual image?”
This project is meant to press boundaries of the stereotypical flirtaious “pin up” girl, sexul empowerment and promotion of self love and owning one's sexuality, weather it is hetorosexual or not, a medium used to bastardise the appeal of a woman's image and in turn deconstructing and reconstructing thus promoting self love and woman empowerment. Thus by using myself as my model and making this a self portrait this will be modern and more relatable to the present day, though I do want to express the 1960’s aesthetic.
For my artist models I have decided to have all male artist models that express women empowerment and sexuality.
Shawn Martinbrough
Born: 1972 (age 47 years)
Notable works: Thief of Thieves, Angeltown, Detective Comics
He is a Comic Artist
I have chosen him because of his aesthetic style of Noir comic, the contrasting black and white. His style is relevant towards the medium the that I wish to use and explore more. Also in his comics one Their of Thieve one of the female characters is presented in a way that I wish to also explore he has created them and expressed them in a way were they are in control of themselves and not sexualised in a male gaze way.
Patrick Nagel
Born, 1945
BA in 1969 in painting and graphic design
He is a minimalist pop artist, I love his works and the was he presents the female form and the female themselves. They are painted were the women is in charge, and they chose and consent to present themselves in this way. They are women taking charge in expressing their sexuality and selves which is what I am trying to express and communicate.
Jean Giraud
“Born in 1938 in Nogent-sur-Marne, he entered the Applied Arts in Paris in 1954.
I thought that it would be interesting into looking to 60’s comic book aesthetic style, as a form of style and to communicate the 60’s aesthetics. As I have chosen not to express my work through the typical clean “pinup” style that everyone knows. As I thought it would be interesting to express my works through a different aesticall approach.
I have also got two “Pin up” models Bettie Page and Yvonne De Carlo to act as secondary references models because I am doing a self portrait and I am not a “pin up” girl from the area nor am I a modern “pin up” girl. That’s why I think it's important to have these women as my secondary models to see how they posed and presented themselves and how I can do that myself or express myself in the same manner.
I have also created a plan on who I am going to create my posters and how they will be executed. I have created a mood board. Tested a style I have chosen to look into to see how long it takes to execute and how easy or hard it is. I also have some simple thumbnail and Ideas that I have been playing around with. To see how I want to execute this project and styles. Weather I use these thumbnails or not is unknown yet as I am still open to developing and further analysing what I am going to present and how I am going to present it.
