Art Theory - week 8 - 1/04/2019

how this class works

Use BVA203 as a concert base for the theory side of a concept from that study.
These are the key ideas I am looking at in BVA203
Pin up girls
sex sells
female empowerment in self and sexuality
bastardizing the appeal of women and deconstructing it to analyses it to reconstruct it in a way that promotes the women
communication with visual imagery
expression of self-empowerment and women empowerment
stereotypes of pun up girls, flirtatiousness and sexuality for males not for the women.
empowerment in sexuality that isn't heterosexual

what is the main themes through out these ideas?
communication, context and presentation of self

Things I'm trying to avoid with my work,
Bias perspective, miss communication, and non-cohesiveness message with visual message and text message.

What I like to further look into? enjoy to research
Interaction with audience and Art, understanding the viewership
Feminist theory
communication in art
political art - but isn't all art political?

This is from the reading of Performing Art, Supporting Publics (Routledge 2011) by Shannon Jackson

It got my further into think about political art and how my work is considered political because of the message I am trying to portrait. It got me thinking into how is my work creating a statement or is it forcing a point of view onto the viewer? this has a lot of layers to it, as because my art work is political but is it portraying a message or is it forcing a message onto the viewer. I want my work to be cohesive with the message so its doesn't confuse the viewer or make them feel overwhelmed with information they are getting from this work. I want it to answer all there questions and leave it up to the viewer what they do with the information they gathered. This is why context and communication is such an important concept to look at in my works, because I am trying to portray a message that could easily be taken out of context if the works isn't visually and verbally cohesive.

This is why I have decided to look into visual and text communication with in art. As this is an important concept with in art and has a lot of play in art and viewing or creating art. As isn't this what art is about communicating a message and or emotional response. This will also make me as an artist more understand of the roll of the viewer and how communication is important in art. As I believe all art has a message to be communicate whether it is political or not, there fore understanding the communication aspect of art and in the process of art making will make me not only a batter artist but also understand the means of other artist works and understand what they are communicating.

Communication in art can also be linked with with self expression in art because it can be considered the same thing or it is parallel to each other. The artist could be trying to communicate something about them self, a story of their past, who they art, or a personal belief of theirs.  These leads into the argument of isn't that was expressionism is? but isn't all art expressionism when your trying to express yourself?, your belief? and message you are passionate about? when you produce art it is connected to you as it shows a part of you, it reflects what type of person you are and what you stand for as a person, or what you like. Art is a form of expression, and what you do with your art and how you express yourself is by your personal choice, whether it is political art or just aesthetic art you are show a piece of yourself to the viewer. You are reflect in your works whether it be a self portrait or not.

Comments

  1. Have you explored the concept of the commodification of pleasure or "sex sells" in your art theory research yet? You could add that as another aspect of your project research.
