European Perspectives on New Zealand, post-colonisation

European art movements that influenced colonial New Zealand artists
Neoclassicism (1770-1830): the name given to quite distinct movements in the decorative and visual arts, literature, theatre, music, and architecture that draw upon Western classical art and culture (usually that of Ancient Greece or Ancient Rome). ... The Enlightenment's emphasis on rationality in part fueled the classical focus.

European art movements that influenced New Zealand artists
Romanticism (1800-1850): An artistic and intellectual movement originating in Europe and characterized by a heightened interest in nature, emphasis on the individual's expression of emotion and imagination, departure from the attitudes and forms of classicism, and rebellion against established social rules.
Romanticism in an area of art that I quite enjoy and think is rather beautiful and very influential. It is quite simply beautiful.

European art movements that influenced New Zealand artists 
Photography: The first photographic process — heliography — was invented around 1824 by Nicéphore Niépce.
Louis-Jacques-Mande Daguerre invented the daguerreotype in 1839.
1848- In the first recorded instance of a daguerreotype being made in New Zealand, Lieutenant-Governor Edward Eyre photographs Eliza Grey, the wife of Governor George Grey, on the verandah of Government House in Wellington. The picture fails.
J. Polack and J. Newman set up studios in Auckland.
H.B. Sealy sets up a studio in Wellington.

J.A. Gilfillan (1793-1864)
A gifted artist, Gilfillan emigrated from Scotland and settled in Whanganui with his wife, Mary, and six children in 1842.  His work provides a valuable record of Whanganui’s early colonial history. After their farm was attacked by a group of upper-river Maori in 1847, the surviving family moved to Australia.  His Whanganui sketches were used to complete the painting Interior of Putiki Pah which hung in the NZ Court at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851.

Gustavus Von Tempsky (1828-1868)
Left Prussia (in modern-day Germany) and worked in goldfields around the world before finally coming to NZ in  1862. He wrote several books about his adventures and illustrated them with his own watercolours.
Mitla: A Narrative of Incidents and Personal Adventures on a Journey in Mexico, Guatemala, and Salvador in the Years of 1853 to 1855 published in London in 1858
Unpublished account of the war, 'Memoranda of the New Zealand campaign 1863–64'

This depiction of an encampment on 7 January 1866 during Major General Trevor Chute's march to New Plymouth shows Gustavus Ferdinand von Tempsky seated, leaning against the wagon wheel, and Isaac Earl Featherston standing behind him. The woman in the foreground is Lucy Takiora Lord.

"Accomplished watercolourist who in command of HMS Fly carried out surveys in New Zealand and Pacific waters, 1847–51. In 1849 the Fly was escort to Bishop Selwyn's schooner Undine on his visit to New Caledonia and the New Hebrides. In 1852 A Series of Lithographic Drawings from Sketches in New Zealand was issued in England. These were after some of the many watercolours and pencil sketches of landscapes and studies of Maoris that Oliver made during his period in New Zealand. A collection of these, held by his grandson, was exhibited in New Zealand House, London, and in the Commonwealth Institute of Art, and was toured in USA by the Smithsonian Institute. Work included Centennial Ex Wtn 1940. "Oliver joined the British Navy on 26 April 1825 and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 28 June 1838, served in the Mediterranean on the 'Asia' commanded by William Fisher. Served on the 'Thalia' commanded by Charles Hope, before being appointed to the 'Queen' commanded by Charles Sullivan, on 30 October 1841, (The 'Queen' was the flagship of Vice-Admiral Edward William Campbell Rich Owen), and was stationed in the Mediterranean. Oliver was promoted to Commander on 22 September 1844, before being appointed Captain on 11 December 1854. Appointed commander of the survey ship HMS 'Fly' on 14 October 1847, he was based in New Zealand and Pacific from 1847 to 1851. During this time the HMS 'Fly' escorted the schooner 'Undine' taking the missionary and Bishop of New Zealand, George Augustus Selwyn (1809-1878), on a tour in the Pacific, visiting Vanuatu (New Hebrides), the Loyalty Islands and New Caledonia in April and May 1850." "While in New Zealand he visited and painted many parts of New Zealand from Northland to Otago, including the Bay of Islands, Whangaruru and Whangarei, Auckland, Wellington and the Hutt Valley, Waikanae and Otaki, Motueka, Nelson, Akaroa, Lyttelton and Otago, sometimes travelling with the Governor Sir George Grey. His New Zealand depictions include portraits and landscapes documenting people and places, and he also visited the Auckland Islands. His sketches from other parts of the world include landscapes in England, Wales, Scotland, Italy, Turkey (Ottoman Empire), the island of Madeira, the island of Tanna in Vanuatu (New Hebrides), and Australia." "John Barr Clark Hoyte was born in England, probably in London, on 22 December 1835, the son of Samuel Hoyte, a landowner. His mother's name is not known, nor are any details of his childhood. From 1856 to 1859 he was employed as a planter in Demerara, Guyana, after which he returned to England. On 20 January 1860, at Leamington, Warwickshire, he married Rose Esther Elizabeth Parsons, daughter of an iron merchant. Within three months they sailed on the Egmont for Auckland, New Zealand, where they were to live for 16 years. Three daughters were born in Auckland, and the couple may also have had a son. A brother of John Hoyte immigrated to New Zealand, possibly in the 1870s" Regional Facilities Auckland (2019) 

"Nothing is known of Hoyte's education and artistic training and we are reduced to the obvious deduction that he was heir to the English tradition of topographic draughtsmanship and watercolour painting. Firm drawing underlies his landscapes, making it appropriate to group him with colonial surveyor–architect artists such as Edward Ashworth, Edmund Norman and George O'Brien. A Dunedin critic recognised this quality in 1876 when suggesting that W. H. Raworth, a lesser exponent of misty Romanticism, would do well to receive drawing lessons from Hoyte." Regional Facilities Auckland (2019)
