"The artist, activist and dissident Ai Wei Wei is in New York this week to open “Good Fences Make Good Neighbors” -- his monumental response to the global migration crisis, and his largest public exhibition to date. The 300 works were installed across New York City to coincide with the release of his film, Human Flow, which documents the mass displacement of people around the world. Suroosh Alvi met him on opening day in Central Park."
notes
- New York is like a machine has a lot of parts
- most powerful and fortunate people are here, as well as unfortunate migrants
- Ai Weiwei use to work as an artist on the street doing portraits for random strangers and tourist.
- The refugee situation has got so out of hand, is there somehow I out myself in a situation where I challenge myself as an artist or a human rights defender?
- I am interested in politics... humanity
- solutions? human conditions in 21st century, globalization.
- so it is a human problem it can be solved by humans easily.
- This can only be solved by us until we have a moral and political understanding of the situation.
- if we don't ask those questions, we take liberty and democracy for granted
- we will end in tragedy thats for sure
- this piece is related to migrants, to borders, fences, territory, nationalism, and society becoming more devided
- find a language that can extend my concern, and build a platform for people to make some kind of argument.
Thoughts
My concern with his works is people on the street who see it do they have any context to his works is there anything saying that that is what his work is about. This is because of the fact that people could walk by this and not even connect that it is about migration.
