Camera basics

Shutter speed - how long the shutter is open this allows light to come in for exposure. It is the noise the camera makes when taking a photo. The longer it is open the more prone to movement and blur it is. When using a long shutter speed make sure camera is on a steady tripod and is not prone to being bumped or moved.
1/8000s, 1/4000s,….. 1/30s, 1/15s, 1/8s, 1/4s, 1/2s, 1s (1”), 2s (2”) etc.
Fractions of seconds = faster shutter, freeze motion, less blur
Seconds to multiple seconds = slower shutter, long exposure, motion blur
Minutes plus = very slow shutter, long exposure, star/light trails,  blurring people

Aperture  - This is how much light you let in via lens. This not only affects the amount of light but this also affects the depth of field how much you let into view. small aperture means there will be a large depth of field. large aperture means there is a shallow depth of field making the subject it is focused on the main focus of the photo.
f/1.0, 1.4, 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22, 32, 45, 64…
Smaller f number = Larger / wider aperture, less Depth of Field (DoF)
Larger f number = Smaller aperture, more DoF, “closed / stopped down”

Smallest f numbder = Wide Open (typically written on name of lens, i.e. 50mm f/1.4)

ISO - sensitivity of image sensor
100 – 200 – 400 – 800 etc.
Lower = slower, less noise / grain, less sensitive.

Higher = faster, more noise / grain, more sensitive.

raw vs jpg
JPEG means the photo has compressed all the information about the picture as soon as it is captured. Smaller file.
RAW contains all information about the picture inside a RAW file, this makes adjustments easier in light room and Photoshop. larger file.

stops
A stop will be either double or half the current exposure value.
A stop more or over means double the current
A stop less or under means half the current

“Increase it by 2 stops” means quadruple the exposure.
“The shot is 3 stops under” means it is 1/8th the correct exposure.

Under exposed = too dark
Over exposed = too bright

white balance
Shoot RAW, worry later (fix it in post).
This will not work with jpegs or video.
Setting what is perceived as white in your photograph.
Orange to Blue shift (K).
Green to Magenta shift.
